Adult Aikido Training
The martial arts instruction in Aikido has been a favorite for adult practitioners in martial arts for decades. The reason being, it has many attributes that one can prosper from:
- Acquiring martial knowledge and proficiency in a non-resistant martial art.
- Optimize awareness for best defense
- Centering- Mentally, physically and spiritually.
- Cultivate a stronger mindset
- Strengthen the body and become flexible.
- Diffuse stress and tension
- Become calm under duress, stress and pressure
- Acquire traditional weapons skills (Japanese sword, staff & knife)
Tri City Aikido gives a person the opportunity to come to a place that is inviting and ego free. This positive tone creates the perfect learning environment for anyone interested in martial arts classes that is non-competitive in nature. Your practice starts each and every time with a Japanese expression that reconstitutes mutual respect for your training partners. Practice ends with expressions of thanks and appreciation. Peace is our way.
In advance training situations, the attackers intensity can be dialed up so the person executing the techniques can get accustomed to dealing with real dynamic attacks. Above right is an example of Campagna Sensei demonstrating Jiyu Waza or free style application with William Ngo, yudansha. Please note; this type of practice with this type of intensity is for select individuals who have acquired all the necessary skills to remain unharmed throughout the practice.
The basic fundamentals of Aikido
Each class is started with stretching, warm-ups followed by classical Aikido martial arts training.
Classical martial art classes consist of:
Ukemi- art of falling
Suwari waza - Techniques practiced on the knees
Taichi waza - Standing applications (frontal attacks, rear attacks and multiple attacks)
Weapons work - Sword, staff & knife
Jiyu waza- Free flowing przctice with a single attacker
Randori-Dealing with Multiple attackers
The classic approach has been proven time and time again to be the quickest avenue to understanding how and why Aikido works the way it does.
Do I need to get into shape before I start?
No, this happens indirectly during the process of martial arts instruction. This is a big plus for anyone interested in getting into better shape. When starting, it's always good advice for anyone is to warm the muscles and start stretching before you begin any physical activity. In other words, have a preroutine before practice. During practice you will find yourself go down to the mat and up many times during the course of the class. In doing so, the legs, abdomen and triceps are constantly working. The heart pumps because of the cardio workout and because you sweat, the body is cleansed of toxins and impurities.
The Perception of your minds eye
The way you intake information and the way you "Think" is a huge part of how this art works.
For example:
- If you're the kind of driver who avoids traffic by changing lanes to a free flowing lane, then you think like an Aikidoist.
- If going with the flow, like sailing, is something you understand and enjoy, then you already possess Aikido knowledge.
- If you admire the gracefull movements of the Matador when a 2500 lbs. bull is charging, the logic is there.
- If you believe that the things that count most in life require time, effort, attention to detail, then martial arts is in your blood.
Some of us walk around half-awake and are looking for that jolt to bring us to a higher level of awareness, Aikido can and will do that for you. Aikido training involves constant application of the non-resistant principles that only Aikido can offer. During the course of the class, your training partners will attempt to grab, strike, push, kick, etc.... Don't worry, because what we do best is teach you how to deal with aggression in a non-violent environment. Dealing with negative energy type scenarios and turning it into a positive experience is what we do at Tri City Aikido.
Since Aikido is based on everyday natural movements of the body, there are no age restrictions to this art. The founder trained into his eightes and one of my oldest friends/teachers is 80 himself and still trains/teaches. Aikido will make you feel alive. Aikido for adults attracts many different types of people from all different types of backgrounds. Believe it or not, not everyone who studies martial arts has a deep desire to excel at martial arts. Tri City Aikido has attracted lawyers, doctors, police officers, professional dance instructors, Corp. Presidents, plumbers, contractors, I.T. people, and more.
